English learners,
Give it a try!

Take a moment to slow down your looking and explore one of Edward Hopper’s best know works “Nighthawks” painted in 1942.

Edward Hopper/Nighthawks/1942

What strikes you in this work?

  • The deserted street?

  • The isolate figure sitting at the counter?

  • The strong contrast of lights and darks?

What is the mood in Hopper’s painting?

  • Mysterious? Melancholy? Romantic? Or something else? And why?

If you had to imagine a story related to this late-night scene, what would it be?

  • Jot down a few sentences to describe your take on the story.

One of Edward Hopper’s most iconic paintings, “Nighthawks” was inspired by a diner in downtown New York City. It shows four people late at night as viewed through the diner's large glass window. Representative of Hopper’s oeuvre, the quiet and introspective scene from daily life, presented in a quasi-cinematographic style, suggests a series of unfolding, yet untold, narratives.
